Today's challenge introduces someone facing a problem, decision or difficult situation. Your task is to offer helpful, thoughtful advice.
Understand the problem. Read the situation carefully. What does the person want? What's worrying them? Is there anything important you don't know?
Consider their options. Think of at least two possible courses of action. What might happen if they follow each one? Are there risks, disadvantages or unexpected consequences?
Give your advice aloud. Imagine the person is sitting opposite you. Explain what you would recommend and why. Try to sound supportive without being patronising or overly forceful.
You might use expressions such as Have you considered…?, One possibility would be… or If I were in your position…, but don't feel obliged to use particular phrases. Communicate naturally.
Extra challenge: Imagine the person rejects your first suggestion or reveals some new information. Would your advice change? How would you respond?
Remember that good advice isn't always about telling someone what to do. Sometimes asking the right question is more helpful than offering an immediate solution.
