10-Minute Challenge

The Cloud Is Not a Cloud

Explain It Simply

Can you make something complicated sound simple? Today's challenge is to explain a concept, process or idea in clear, everyday English. Forget complicated terminology and impressive vocabulary — the real skill is making yourself understood!
You need:
Your knowledge & a little imagination

Quick Start

1
Think about the main idea
2
Explain it in simple English
3
Make it clearer with an example or analogy

Let's Begin!

cloud storage

A neighbour keeps hearing that their photos are “in the cloud” and worries that rain might affect them. Explain what cloud storage actually means.

Your audience: A neighbour who uses a phone but knows little about computers.

  1. Explain. Give a clear explanation aloud in about 45–60 seconds.
  2. Make it concrete. Avoid “servers”, “data centre” and “synchronisation” in your first explanation.
  3. Check understanding. Ask one question that would reveal whether your listener genuinely understood.

Extra challenge: Give an even shorter version in twenty words or fewer, without sacrificing the essential meaning.
