You need:
Your vocabulary and a little creativity

Quick Start

1
Read the original sentence
2
Say it three different ways
3
Compare the meaning, tone and style

Let's Begin!

“No. That’s not my problem.”

When helping isn’t possible

It’s 4.55 pm on Friday. A colleague asks you to stay for another two hours to finish a report. You already have an important personal commitment and cannot stay.

You could say, “No. That’s not my problem.” But you need a diplomatic no: a refusal that is clear, respectful and honest. How else might you respond?

  1. Clear: Refuse politely without leaving any doubt about your availability.
  2. Warm: Show understanding without apologising excessively or inventing an excuse.
  3. Constructive: Offer a realistic alternative only if you genuinely can.

Extra challenge: Your colleague replies, “But we really need you!” Respond again. Can you stay friendly and firm?
