10-Minute Challenge

Sorry, Not Sorry

Say it Differently

There's more than one way to say almost anything in English! Can you express the same idea using different words, expressions or sentence structures? Challenge yourself to become a more flexible, resourceful communicator — without changing what you really mean.
You need:
Your vocabulary and a little creativity

Quick Start

1
Read the original sentence
2
Say it three different ways
3
Compare the meaning, tone and style

Let's Begin!

“I’m sorry you feel that way.”

The apology that isn’t quite an apology

You forgot to send a friend an important document you promised to deliver yesterday. They missed a deadline as a result. You reply: “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

That sentence sounds like an apology, but it says nothing about what you did. In this challenge, turn a Sorry, Not Sorry response into an apology that actually repairs something.

  1. Identify the problem. What is missing from the original reply? What responsibility is being avoided?
  2. Rewrite it. Apologise in no more than three sentences. Acknowledge the mistake, recognise its effect & offer a realistic next step.
  3. Say it aloud. Try the apology without making excuses or promising something you cannot deliver.

Extra challenge: Your friend replies, “That doesn’t help me now.” Respond without repeating your apology or becoming defensive.
