The Polite Insult

Say it Differently

There's more than one way to say almost anything in English! Can you express the same idea using different words, expressions or sentence structures? Challenge yourself to become a more flexible, resourceful communicator — without changing what you really mean.
You need:
Your vocabulary and a little creativity

Quick Start

1
Read the original sentence
2
Say it three different ways
3
Compare the meaning, tone and style

Let's Begin!

“Thanks for finally replying.”

A compliment with a sting

After waiting several days for a reply, you receive an email from a colleague. You begin your response: “Thanks for finally replying.”

The word finally may communicate a perfectly understandable frustration — but it can also turn a courteous opening into The Polite Insult.

  1. Read between the lines. What might the recipient infer about your attitude? What useful information does the sentence leave unstated?
  2. Choose your purpose. Rewrite the opening three ways: (a) simply acknowledge the reply; (b) mention the delay neutrally; (c) raise the impact of the delay and request a better arrangement for next time.
  3. Compare the effects. Say your three versions aloud. Which would you use with someone whose cooperation you need? Explain why.

Extra challenge: Rewrite “As I already explained…” so that you can repeat necessary information without sounding exasperated.
