Let's Begin!

Sometimes a sentence is grammatically correct, but it tells a completely different story from the one the speaker intended.

Five people have sent messages. You know what each person meant. Change their words to match their intentions. Some changes may involve only one or two words.

  1. The disappearing train. Intended: The train left seconds before I reached the platform. Original: “I nearly missed the train.”
  2. The generous friend. Intended: I gave Sam £10; he’ll pay me back. Original: “I borrowed Sam £10.”
  3. The healthier lifestyle. Intended: I gave up cigarettes six months ago. Original: “I stopped to smoke six months ago.”
  4. The remote worker. Intended: Working from home feels familiar and comfortable to me now. Original: “I used to work from home.”
  5. The happy newcomer. Intended: I have some friends here, and that’s a good thing. Original: “I’ve got few friends here.”

Extra challenge: Invent your own one-word misunderstanding that could cause an awkward or funny situation. Explain how the original and corrected sentences differ in meaning.
