Quick Start

1
Read carefully & spot the mistake
2
Correct it without changing the meaning
3
Reveal the answer & compare

Let's Begin!

The Grammar Police have arrested six sentences for allegedly breaking the rules. Unfortunately, some officers are rather badly informed.

Examine each case. Decide whether the sentence should be released without charge or really needs correcting in standard English. Give your reasons.

  1. Ending with a preposition: “Who did you send the invitation to?”
  2. The mysterious pronoun: “Everyone should bring their own mug.”
  3. The secret confession: “Between you and I, that meeting could have been an email.”
  4. The split infinitive: “I decided to quietly leave before the karaoke started.”
  5. The dress code disaster: “If I would have known about the dress code, I’d have worn shoes.”
  6. The identity crisis: “It’s me. I’m outside.”

Extra challenge: Invent a perfectly acceptable English sentence that would annoy an overenthusiastic Grammar Police officer. Write a two-sentence argument in its defence.
