Your language detective skills

Quick Start

3
Reveal the answer & compare

Let's Begin!

A company has written instructions for its new household robot. The robot follows directions literally, which is proving inconvenient.

Inspect six lines from its quick-start guide. Decide what is incorrect, unclear or potentially misleading. Three lines need no changes.

  1. “Don’t forget turning the robot off before you clean it.”
  2. “If the battery is damaged, do not use it.”
  3. “After inspecting the robot and its battery, put it in a dry place.”
  4. “The robot can clean floors, which are very dirty, automatically.”
  5. “Keep the robot away from open flames.”
  6. “To reset the device, press the blue button for three seconds.”

Extra challenge: Write one instruction that a very literal robot could misunderstand, then rewrite it so there’s only one sensible interpretation. No dangerous experiments required!
