Let's Begin!

The fictional Littlebridge Gazette has hired a new headline writer. The stories are real within the imaginary town—but several headlines are accidentally misleading.

Use the information after each headline to decide whether it needs changing. Rewrite the misleading headlines so a hurried reader would understand the intended story.

  1. “Teacher Finds Lost Dog with Telescope”
Story: A teacher used a telescope to spot a dog across a field.
  2. “Museum to Open on Saturday”
Story: A new local museum opens to visitors this Saturday.
  3. “Police Spot Suspect with Drone”
Story: Police officers used a drone to locate a suspect.
  4. “Only Local Chef Wins Award”
Story: A local chef won an award, and nobody else from the town won one.
  5. “Council Confirms New Bridge Is Safe”
Story: Engineers have completed safety checks, and the council has confirmed the result.
  6. “Woman Says Neighbour Stole Bicycle Yesterday”
Story: Yesterday, a woman told police that her neighbour had stolen her bicycle the previous week.

Extra challenge: Write two headlines for a perfectly ordinary event—one accurate and informative, the other sensational but technically possible to interpret as true. Explain the trick.
