Serendipity
/ˌserənˈdɪpɪti/

A happy accident?

You pop into a bookshop to buy a birthday present. While browsing, you unexpectedly meet an old friend who tells you about a job opportunity that turns out to be perfect for you.

1. Make a guess. What might serendipity mean in this situation? Is it simply the same as luck?

2. Make it personal. Think of a genuinely unexpected discovery or pleasant coincidence in your life. Tell the story aloud in two or three sentences, using serendipity if it fits naturally.

3. Make a distinction. You win a prize after deliberately entering a competition. Would you normally describe that as serendipity? Explain why or why not.

Extra challenge: Try using serendipitous in a sentence. Would it sound natural in a casual conversation with a friend?
