Consider these four statements, spoken in British English:
1. Investigate. Does quite mean exactly the same thing in all four statements? Which examples sound more like completely or absolutely? Which could suggest a more moderate degree?
2. Say it differently. Read statement 2 aloud as a sincere compliment, then as a rather lukewarm response. What changes in your voice?
3. Make it your own. Write or say two natural sentences containing quite. Choose different meanings or attitudes.
Extra challenge: Imagine someone tells you, “Your presentation was quite good.” Would you automatically take that as enthusiastic praise? What else would you need to know?
